Hi, ive recently had the idea to build a one (possibly two) manned hovercraft.
Im thinking of using a flymo lawn mower engine and its impeller for lift, a weed wacker engine and a 22" propeller for propultion and some waterproof nylon sheet for the skirt!
stay tuned for more...

Not sure how much a flymo engine would cost, but I dounbt it could lift itself, let alone a person!

Use a gas-powered 'leaf blower'. That is what was used for the Sydney 2000 Olympics! Do you remember those 'hover saucers' that they flew into the area on for 'opening ceremonies'? Basically, they were those metal snow-saucers (or something very similar) turned upside down, with a leaf-blower that blows a stream of air into the 'vacuous' underside of the saucer, creating lift. To steer this, one merely need 'lean forward' a bit, causing the air to seep out under the backside a bit. Now, STEERING bacame a big problem... which was solve dby attaching essentially a dolly-wheel (like the ones under a supermarket shopping cart, the ones capable of 360-degree movement). That way, to 'brake', you lean 'back' causing the wheel to make contact with the ground, and friction/gravity slows you enough to turn. As I understood it, this device is kind of useless on grassy terrain, but a speed-demon on pavement like parking lots, etc. One could actualy travel 20 or 30MPH on this (about as fast as one can peddle a bicycle on flat ground...). It would be wicked on an ice-covered pond or lake, eh??!?!
